Electric Horse Fence Systems

Electric Horse Fencing Built for Colorado's Dry, Rocky Soil

Your horses need a fence that keeps them safe and gives you peace of mind. A fence that can handle a spooked horse at full gallop, survive a Colorado hailstorm, and still look great from your kitchen window. That is what Alpine Earthworks delivers.

Here's the other thing about an electric fence: it either works or it doesn't. There's no in-between. A horse that tests a dead line once will never respect that fence again. So when I install electric fencing, everything I do comes back to making sure that charge is there every single time.

I'm Dylan with Alpine Earthworks, and my team and I have been installing electric horse fences out here for years. The thing we come back to on every job is grounding. Our dry, rocky soil fights you on it, and most of the "broken" electric fences I get called out to fix were never grounded properly in the first place.

Electric Fence Systems We Install

  • High-tensile electric wire — low maintenance and tough. Best for bigger pastures where you need miles of fence without miles of upkeep.
  • Electric tape and rope — horses can see it, which matters more than people think. Great for paddocks and smaller runs.
  • Combination systems — electric wire backed by physical fencing. Belt and suspenders for horses that need convincing.
  • Solar-powered energizers — no power line? No problem. These run reliably in remote pastures where running electric isn't practical.
  • Rotational grazing setups — portable systems you can move as you rotate pastures. I'll set you up with a kit that's easy to manage.

If you've been burned by an electric fence that stopped working, give me a call at 720-272-7760. I'll figure out what went wrong and make it right.

The Grounding Problem Nobody Tells You About

Often, when someone tells me their electric fence "just stopped working," the problem is underground. Colorado's soil is dry and rocky, which makes electrical grounding a real challenge. Most installers put in a couple of ground rods and call it done. That works in Iowa. It doesn't work here.

I install extended ground rod systems spaced and configured specifically for your soil conditions. Sometimes that means more rods. Sometimes it means different rod placement. Either way, when I drive off your property, that fence is delivering a consistent pulse. Not a maybe.

And the pulse itself matters too. It's a quick zap that startles your horse. That's it. No injury, no danger. One or two encounters and most horses won't go near the line again. I set every system so the charge does its job without causing any harm.

How We Ensure Your Electric Fence Works Great

An electric fence that works sometimes is worse than no electric fence at all. It teaches horses to test the line. Every system I install is built for consistent, reliable charge.

  • Extended grounding — Multiple ground rods spaced for Colorado's dry, rocky soil. This is where most installs fail, and where I spend the most time getting right.
  • Right-sized energizer — Matched to your fence length and how much vegetation will touch the line. I build in margin so the system doesn't struggle.
  • Solar and battery for remote pastures — Reliable power even when the nearest outlet is a half-mile away.
  • Horse-safe calibration — Short pulse, enough to train, never enough to hurt.
  • Tested before I leave — I check voltage at multiple points on the fence line. You'll see the numbers yourself before I pack up.

Where We Work

I've installed electric fence everywhere from five-acre paddocks in Monument to 200-acre spreads out past Limon. Soil conditions change a lot across the state, and the grounding approach has to change with them. That's the kind of thing I figure out on-site.

Common Questions About Electric Horse Fencing

Is electric fencing safe for horses? Yes, very. The pulse is a quick zap that startles but doesn't hurt. It's the same technology used on horse operations worldwide. Most horses learn to respect the fence after one or two encounters and never touch it again.

Will my electric fence work in winter? It will if it's installed correctly. Snow and ice can ground out a poorly installed system, but that's a setup problem, not a winter problem. I account for Colorado winters in every install: snow load, frozen ground, the works.

Can the electric fence be the only fence I use? For trained horses on bigger acreage, absolutely. For green horses, herd-bound horses, or tight spaces, I usually recommend pairing electric with a physical barrier. I'll give you my honest recommendation based on your horses and your setup.

How does the cost compare to other horse fencing? Electric is typically the most affordable option per linear foot, especially on large properties. When you're fencing 20 or 40 acres, the savings over wood or vinyl add up fast.

What kind of maintenance does it need? Check the energizer periodically and keep vegetation off the wire. That's the big one. Weeds touching the line drain the charge. I'll show you a quick walk-the-line routine that takes ten minutes and keeps everything running.
