Gravel Driveway Contractor in Colorado
Gravel Driveways Built for Rural Colorado
Gravel is the most popular driveway material in rural Colorado for good reason. It is affordable, handles heavy loads, drains well, and works for driveways of any length. From a hundred-foot residential entry to a half-mile ranch road, gravel gets the job done.
I'm Dylan with Alpine Earthworks. My team and I install gravel driveways built to last. That means proper excavation, a compacted base layer, correct material sizing, and drainage that moves water off the surface. A pile of gravel dumped on dirt is not a driveway. What we build is.

Not All Gravel is the Same
The right mix of sizes and material types makes the difference between a driveway that packs firm and drains well versus one that turns muddy or loses material. We select and source the right aggregate for your soil conditions and traffic needs.
Spring is the ideal time for gravel driveway work in Colorado. The ground is thawed and workable, and you get the benefit of a fresh surface before summer traffic. If your gravel driveway took a beating over the winter, spring is when to address it.
Our Gravel Driveway Process
Every gravel driveway we build follows the same sequence that separates a real driveway from a pile of rock.
- Subgrade excavation - Soft material removed and subgrade compacted to create a stable foundation.
- Base layer installation - Larger aggregate placed for drainage and load support.
- Surface layer placement - Properly sized gravel for a smooth, drivable surface that packs firm.
- Crown and drainage grading - Surface shaped to direct water off the driveway.
- Edge definition - Clean edges that keep gravel where it belongs.
- Culvert installation - Water crossings along the driveway managed with properly sized culverts.

Common Questions About Gravel Driveways
How thick should a gravel driveway be? A properly built gravel driveway typically has four to six inches of base material topped with two to three inches of surface gravel. Heavier traffic or soft soil may require more. We specify the depth based on your conditions.
Will my gravel driveway get muddy? Not if it is built correctly. Proper base preparation, material selection, and drainage prevent mud. If your current gravel driveway is muddy, it was likely laid without adequate base work or drainage, and we can fix that.
How often does a gravel driveway need maintenance? Periodic grading once or twice a year and occasional material replenishment keeps a gravel driveway in good shape. Traffic, weather, and slope all affect how often maintenance is needed.
Can you fix my existing gravel driveway? Yes. Adding material, regrading, improving drainage, and addressing washouts can restore most gravel driveways to good condition. Sometimes a top-up and regrade is all that is needed.
Is gravel the cheapest driveway option? Per linear foot, gravel is the most economical choice, especially for long driveways. The savings are significant when you are building a quarter-mile drive versus a short residential entry.
